GSM Mobile Networks - Quality of Service Survey

The mobile GSM networks of the operators Optimus, TMN and Vodafone offer high coverage and performance levels in Lisbon and Oporto and along the A1 motorway, the main road artery linking Portugal?s two biggest cities, indicates a quality assessment study carried out by the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM) in December 2002.

The values for the three indicators in question - coverage, accessibility and audio quality - are considered to be very good in terms of accessibility and audio quality (regarding the latter, 99.6 percent of test calls had good or acceptable quality levels). The three mobile networks presented uniform coverage in Lisbon, Oporto and on the A1.

The methodology is the same as in previous ANACOM studies, with the particularity that the targeted operators did not have prior notice of the activity and that same was limited to the cities of Lisbon and Oporto and to the A1 motorway.

The tests were carried out between 10 and 30 December 2002 and involved 5,045 calls, of which 96.3 percent were successfully set up, with a satisfactory conversation phase. The calls were entirely automatic, with simultaneous connections to the three operators.
