Network of postal establishments at the end of 2008

The report has been released, with reference to 2008, on the network of postal establishments of CTT - Correios de Portugal (CTT), the concessionaire company of the universal postal service. This document shows that, as at the end of 2008, there were 2,873 postal establishments in operation (20 more than at the end of 2007), of which 896 were fixed post offices (16 fewer than in 2007, one having its operation interrupted due to a fire), 12 were mobile post offices and 1,965 were postal service offices (36 more than in the previous year).

31 percent of the network of postal establishments is made up of post offices with CTT management, with the remaining 69 per cent managed by third parties (1,965 postal service offices and 13 agencies). As far as geographical distribution is concerned, the report states that at the end of 2008, all municipalities had at least one post office, while in 94.5 percent of municipalities (291 municipalities) there were two or more postal establishments (at the end of 2007 this figure was 290).

Making an international comparison, based on data available from the Universal Postal Union (UPU), with reference to 2007, it was concluded that Portugal compares favourably with the average of the Member States of the European Union, both in terms of postal coverage and in terms of postal density.

Pursuant to the Universal Postal Service Concession, ANACOM received 28 notifications during 2008 from CTT, corresponding to: one notification on the closure of post offices, 14 notifications on closure of post offices and their replacement by postal service offices, one notification on the establishment of a post office, 6 notifications on the reduction of post office opening hours; and 6 notifications on the extension of post office opening hours.
