Meeting of Working Party 4B of Study Group 4 - Geneva

The fourth meeting of working party 4B was held last 7-14 September in Geneva. This working party covers issues linked to the performance and availability goals of Fixed Satellite Service (FSS), Broadcasting Satellite Service (BSS) and Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) systems, including applications using internet protocol (IP), as well as Satellite News Gathering (SNG) systems.

The work was carried out in three subgroups responsible for the following topics:

  • Subgroup 4B1: Issues associated to performance and aspects of IP-based systems;
  • Subgroup 4B2: Issues associated to emergency telecommunications;
  • Subgroup 4B3: Other issues.

The work resulted in the production of 11 documents, of which the following stand out:

  • Draft revision of Recommendation ITU-R S.1521 on admissible error performance for a hypothetical digital reference path based on synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH);
  • Preliminary draft of new Report ITU-R S.[IPQoS-RPT] on quality of service (QoS) architectures and mechanisms and their supply to IP-based satellite networks;
  • Preliminary draft of new Recommendation ITU-R S.[MULTI-CARRIER] on multi-carrier transmission techniques for satellite systems.
