Comparison of prices of postal services (UPS) in the European Union

/ Updated on 21.01.2011

The summary of the study on ''Comparisons of prices of universal postal service providers in the European Union in 2010'', carried out by ANACOM, is now available. The full version was published only in portuguese.

This study compares the prices of postal services provided by the universal service providers (USP) in Portugal and in the other European Union (EU) countries, specifically of national priority and non-priority mail up to 20 grams, in standard format, of intra-community cross-border mail in the European Union, up to 20g, in the standard format, and of national parcels up to 2kg.

The collected data show that the average of the prices of the postal services under study increased in 2010 in all Member States (in Euros and purchasing power parities (PPP), with a larger increase in the latter). In terms of the services analyzed, the increase of the average year on year was greater for the priority intra-community mail, and lower for parcels. Nonetheless it should be noted that eleven countries had not changed, by this date, any of the prices of the services considered in 2010.

In Portugal, the only price change recorded in 2010 was the increase of the price of the national parcels service. Prices in Euros are below the average, except for the non-priority intercommunity mail service. In PPC terms, prices in Portugal are below the EU average in all services.

In the group of services analyzed, Portugal has improved its performance versus the remaining Member States with respect to 2009, both in Euros and in PPC, except for the non-priority intra-community mail, which goes up one place in Euros, and for parcels, which kept the same place, in Euros.
