Jazztel and Optimus obtain Licences for Fixed Telephone Service

Jazztel Portugal - Serviços de Telecommunicações, S.A. and Optimus - Telecomunicações, S.A. have been licensed by ICP to provide a Fixed Telephone Service. With these licences, operators are qualified to provide a fixed telephone service as from 1 January 2000, in terms of Decree-Law nr. 381-A/97, of 30 December, which establishes the access system for operating public telecommunication networks and providing public use telecommunication services.

In conjunction with the above, Jazztel Portugal - Serviços de Telecomunicações, S.A. was also licensed as an operator of Public Telecommunication Networks. With this licence, said company is qualified to establish and to supply a public telecommunications network, ensuring connections at a national level and including, within an international scope, interconnection to networks and services of other countries.

Within the scope of the process started by ICP on 15 June 1999, it must not be forgotten that E3G, Sonae - Data Networks, Maxitelsat and Teleweb have already been licensed with regard to the Fixed Telephone Service.

Voice telephony is the last of the market segments to be opened up to competition. When this happens on 1 January 2000, the Portuguese telecommunications market will be fully liberalised.
