Clients exceed one million in cable TV - end of 2001

At the end of 2001, the number of clients of cable TV services has reached 1,1 million in Portugal according to data made available by the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM). This figure represents a growth rate of 21% against the same period of last year, which is equivalent, in absolute terms, to the adhesion of 194 new subscribers of the services available in the market.

The data gathered by Anacom evidence that, on December 31, 2001, 60% of the Portuguese households were cabled, that is, could enjoy the possibility of being connected to the service. This percentage corresponds, in absolute figures, to approximately 3 million households. The share of the total amount of households effectively cabled, in the universe of the existing households, was around 22%.

More than one half, 58%, of the cable television service subscribers live in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, followed by the region of the North with 22% of the total amount of subscribers.

In December 2001, the total amount of subscribers of the DTH - Direct To Home technology (satellite), the alternative to the cable infrastructure for the distribution of TV signal, has reached 224,000, which corresponds to a growth rate of 14% as compared with the figures for the third quarter of the same year.

About one third, 32%, of subscribers that access the service through satellite technology live in the region of the North, being followed by Lisbon and Tagus Valley region with 24% and the region of the Centre with 21%.
