"Digital divide" in debate in the VI Ministerial and Postal and Telecommunications Administrations of the CPLP meeting

The VI Ministerial and Postal and Telecommunications Administration of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) meeting was held in Cape Verde on April 25th, 2002, devoted to the topic "Convergence within the Communications and Information Technology sectors, regulation and narrowing the digital divide".

The meeting was attended by government and regulatory authority representatives from portuguese-speaking countries, and addressed the main challenges emerging from the Information Society, in particular, the digital divide and the role played by communications and information technologies in combating the asymmetries that exist in developing countries, thus continuing the core debate of the World Telecom Development Conference (WTDC02), of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), held in March, 2002, in Turkey.

The Annual General Meeting and 10th Forum of the Association of Postal and Telecommunications Operators of Official Portuguese-Speaking Countries and Territories (AICEP), were held during the same week, devoted to the topic "Communications and Competition", analysed in three panels: society and economy at the start of the new century, postal services and telecommunications.
