There were 1.4 million cable television subscribers in Portugal as at the end of 2006, slightly up on the number seen at the end of the third quarter and up 1.4% on the figure recorded at the end of 2005. This means that 19 thousand new subscribers signed up over the year.
This quarterly rise in the number of cable television subscribers is a direct reflection of the same trend in the number of customers of one of the alternative operators, which along the course of 2006 invested in its infrastructure and offer range.
The highest growth in the number of cable TV subscribers was seen in the North (3.1%).
Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the Azores and Madeira also stand out, with respective increases of 9.4% and 4.6%.
The number of subscribers as a percentage of the Portuguese population stood at 13.4%, an increase of 0.2% over the previous quarter.
Madeira and Alentejo are the regions with the highest and lowest rates of cable television penetration, with 72.5% and 9.3% respectively.
Around 79 thousand households were cabled by all the operators during the quarter, 2% more than the figure for the previous quarter. The total number of cabled households, for all operators, has therefore passed the 4 million mark.
During the quarter the North was the region with the highest growth in the number of cabled households (4.6%). It was also the North that saw the largest year-on-year rise (16.2%).
No major changes were seen in the distribution of cabled households by region, with the Lisbon area continuing to have the biggest concentration of cabled households (44%).
At the end of 2006, the television distribution service using Direct To Home (DTH) technology had 436 thousand subscribers, 8% more than in the previous quarter and 10.4% more than at the end of 2005.
In absolute terms, this translates to 32 thousand more DTH subscribers over the quarter.
