Pieter Reitsma is International Post Corporation’s Head of Sustainability and manages the global postal industry sustainability programme run by IPC.
Pieter is the architect and manager of IPC’s Environmental Measurement and Monitoring System (EMMS), the framework structure that is behind the global postal industry’s common emissions-reduction programme and allows for postal operators across the globe to contribute to lowering the industry’s carbon footprint through a common, standardised reporting system. The results of postal industry’s sustainability programme are published each year in the IPC Postal Sector Sustainability Report.
Pieter is responsible for collecting, auditing and publishing data and contributes to the strategic communications for the global programme. The global postal industry’s sustainability programme was launched in December 2009 during the COP 15 UN climate change negotiations in Copenhagen, when the founding participating posts collectively pledged to cut collective emissions by 20% by 2020 on 2008 figures – the 20-2020 pledge. Since then the programme has been expanded in both scope and reach, and includes Scope 3 reporting and counts participating postal operators in the Americas, Africa, Asia Pacific and Europe. Participating postal operators in this global industry programme represent in excess of 80% of global mail volumes. Currently, Pieter is developing the next phase in IPC’s EMMS.
On special assignment from the then TNT (now PostNL) in the Netherlands, Pieter joined IPC in March 2008. He began his career at TNT Mail in 1996 in the Registered Mail Sorting Centre, as a process-team manager and later on as an IT project manager. Pieter then worked three years as a product developer and subsequently as project manager on several projects in the areas of marketing, communications and strategy.
Pieter Reitsma holds a Master’s degree in Agricultural Science at Wageningen University, The Netherlands.
